Earthquake Rocks Kenya On The Day Of Unveiling New Jubilee Party and ODM 10 Celebrations, Is It A Portent Of The Future Perhaps?

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter Scale rocked the Western part of Kenya and Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda on the 10th of September 2016 from 3:05PM  to 3:06 PM (UTC+3,GMT+3).

Apparently the epicenter was deep in the heart of Lake Victoria,23 km ENE of Nsunga, Tanzania and at magnitude 5.8 on the Richter Scale it is one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in decades.

UPDATE: It is the strongest earthquake since 1900 which was felt within a radius of 150 kilometers.

Update 12:54 UTC : USGS predicts a MMI VII shaking near the epicenter which will be VERY DAMAGING as MMI VII correspondents to Strong shaking.

Update 12:53 UTC : Local reports are mentioning that houses and a church have collapsed in Bukoba, Tanzania

Update 12:50 UTC : Based on our findings today's earthquake might be one of the strongest of the last decades in the Lake Victoria region.

IMPORTANT Update 16:02 UTC : We are sad to report that at least 10 people have been killed and 100 injured due to this earthquake

A very dangerous and probably also damaging shallow earthquake struck the Nsunga area in Tanzania. We received alerts from scared people from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.

                                 Former Supermarket Damaged By Earthquake

Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship.

Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line.

Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.

Environment :

Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
