Commitee to resolve maize crisis
Written By:PMPS , Posted: Mon, Dec 01, 2008
The government is Monday expected to announce new prices for maize and Flour and when the new prices would become effective.
This decision was reached at the cabinet subcommittee on food security which met on Sunday chaired by prime minister Raila Odinga, and tabled a number of proposals to the millers on how to bring prices down.
Millers were in agreement that if they got a regular supply of maize at cheaper prices, they would have no problem lowering the prices.
The representatives of the millers asked for time to brief all their members and agree on how much the prices would come down.
At the meeting were Agriculture Minister Mr William Ruto, his PS, Dr Romano Kiome, Treasury Secretary Joseph Kinyua, NCPB boss Mr Misoi, PS Dr Mohammed Isahakia of PM's office and Special Programmes Minister Naomi Shaban.
In the discussions, the government committed to supply maize to millers at Sh1750 per bag and wanted to know how much flour would sell at with that price.
The PM said food prices have become a serious crisis that "has all the makings of a catastrophe."
He told the meeting that the government wanted to know how the price of unga can come down and how soon it can be done.
Ruto asked the millers to state how much maize they want the government to supply in order for the prices to come down
